Bio/Description

Jeffrey Himpele is an anthropologist and filmmaker who has been deeply engaged with Indigenous cultures and media makers in Latin America. Based on years of fieldwork in Andean Bolivia, his book Circuits of Culture: Media, Politics and Indigenous Identity in the Andes traces the indigenization of national politics, filmmaking and capitalism in La Paz. In both his writing and teaching, he aims to bring to light the significance of Indigenous media from the Andes and around the world. As a filmmaker, he has made award-winning films in Bolivia and Chichen Itza (Mexico) on the social dynamics at Indigenous archaeological sites from native points of view. He is also director of the VizE Lab for Ethnographic Data Visualization.
