Indigenous Studies

The Humanities Council’s Fund for Canadian Studies has named historian and religious studies scholar Emma Anderson (University of Ottawa) as the 2023-24 Laurence G. Pathy ’56 Visiting Professor in Canadian Studies. Anderson will teach the Program in Humanistic Studies course “Indigenous Peoples and Christianity.” The undergraduate course will explore the effects of contact between the Europeans and Indigenous peoples from early 17th century encounters in Canada and North American into the residential schools of the 19th and 20th centuries.
Princeton University Public Lectures presents “Moving the Needle Toward Indigenous Climate Justice: Reflections on 3 Years of Policy and Advocacy,” a lecture by Kyle Whyte, the George Willis Pack Professor and faculty director, Tishman Center for Social Justice and the Environment at the University of Michigan.

Author Talk: Diane Wilson

Diane Wilson (Dakota) is a writer, speaker and educator who has published two award-winning books as well as essays in numerous publications. Her new novel, The Seed Keeper, was published by Milkweed Editions in 2021. A haunting novel spanning several generations, The Seed Keeper follows a Dakota family’s struggle to preserve their way of life and their sacrifices to protect what matters most.
Tlingit Art, Spirit, and Ancestry: Healing Histories of Dispossession

This symposium seeks to explore this question by reuniting Tlingit scholars and artists with these belongings. Our symposium will confront histories of dispossession and ask how we can restore ancestral connections. Speakers will reorient Western understandings of material objects towards Tlingit and Indigenous experiences of embodiment, spirituality, land, and kinship. We envision this symposium as the beginning of an ongoing partnership between Princeton University and the University of Alaska Southeast.
This second annual event takes place during the Punihle Waniipakw Niipaahum (Falling Leaf Moon) on Lunaapahkiing (Munsee land), at Princeton University and the Institute for Advanced Study. The gathering puts students, staff, faculty, and members in direct dialogue with members of the Munsee-Delaware Nation to learn about Munsee language, history, and culture. Pre-registration is required for virtual and in-person attendance.
Princeton University Art Museum presents Witness, an exhibition by Rose B. Simpson at [email protected] through Sunday, Sept. 11. Simpson is joined by curator Brian Just for an artist conversation on Friday, Sept. 9 at 5:30 p.m. on Zoom (English) and Streamtext (Spanish captions).

A Conversation with Robbie Richardson

Richardson, a member of Pabineau First Nation (Mi’kmaw) in New Brunswick, Canada, and an assistant professor of English at Princeton University, discusses his current project, his research and teaching in Europe and at Princeton.
